Lipoedema is a condition affecting the fat cells. It tends to run in families and is more prevalent in women than men. The condition causes an increase in the number of fat cells and also causes those cells to swell. Lipoedema predominantly affects the legs, hips and buttocks, so that the body appears unusually 'pear-shaped' and does not respond to diet or exercise.
Unlike lymphoedema, lipoedema does not affect the feet. It may affect the arms, but never the hands, giving rise to a bracelet effect at the wrist or ankle. Often the affected tissue can feel cold and painful to touch, and has the tendency to bruise easily.
Although MLD cannot effect the size of the fat cells and therefore cannot 'treat' lipoedema, the condition can cause the lymphatic system in the affected area(s) to become compromised. This can lead to excess fluid build up in the limbs, exacerbating the condition and leading to the limbs looking more swollen and feeling very heavy. There are also the associated complications of a tendency to infection, varicose veins and skin problems.
Along with the wearing of compression garments, MLD can be a useful tool for helping to reduce the amount of swelling in an area, thus improving limb mobility and appearance.
